The quiet carriage

I got on the last train home and sat in the quiet carriage because it was the only one with free seats.

It was very quiet. Not the polite quiet of a quiet carriage, where people tap at phones and someone's music leaks out of their headphones. This was total silence. Twenty or so passengers, sitting with their hands in their laps, looking straight ahead. Nobody read. Nobody slept. Nobody looked at me.

There was a sign above the door that I didn't remember from other trains. White letters on blue:

QUIET CARRIAGE. PLEASE DO NOT SPEAK. IT IS LISTENING.

I thought it was a joke, some kind of art project. I almost took a photo.

At the next station a man got on, a big cheerful man on his phone, talking loudly about a football match. Nobody looked up. The doors closed. He kept talking.

The lights flickered once.

When they came back, his seat was empty. His phone was on the floor, the call still connected, a tiny voice saying "Hello? Mike? Mike, you there?"

Nobody moved. Nobody made a sound. The woman across from me had tears running down her face, and she didn't wipe them away, and she didn't sob, and I understood then that she was being very, very careful.

I sat like that for forty minutes. My phone buzzed in my pocket and I let it. Someone's stomach rumbled somewhere behind me and I heard a sharp intake of breath from the whole carriage, and then nothing happened, and we all breathed out together, silently.

At my station I stood up very slowly and walked to the door and pressed the button with my knuckle so it wouldn't beep, and it beeped anyway, and the lights flickered, and I threw myself out onto the platform.

The doors closed behind me. The train pulled away, perfectly quiet.

I've checked the timetable since. There's no train at that time. Not on that line, not on any line.

But sometimes, late at night, when I'm on the platform waiting, I notice that the last carriage of an ordinary train is very quiet. And I walk all the way to the front.
