Lower your electricity bill without being cold
- Find the standby hogs. TVs, consoles and old chargers on standby can add up. A switchable power strip makes turning them all off one click.
- Wash clothes at 30 degrees. Most of a washing machine's energy goes into heating water.
- Fill the dishwasher before running it, and use the eco setting. It's slower but uses less.
- Lids on pans when cooking. The water boils faster.
- Only boil the water you need in the kettle.
- Draught-proof doors and windows. Cheap foam strips and a draught excluder make a room feel warmer without touching the heating.
- LED bulbs use a fraction of the energy of old ones and last years.
- Read your meter monthly so you notice changes early.
