Kitchen tricks that save time and food
- Freeze bread sliced. Toast slices straight from the freezer.
- Wrap herbs in a damp paper towel and keep them in a bag in the fridge. They last days longer.
- Too much salt in a soup? Add more liquid, or a splash of acid like lemon juice to balance it. (The potato trick doesn't really work.)
- Bring eggs and butter to room temperature quickly by putting eggs in warm water for 5 minutes and grating cold butter.
- Put a wooden spoon across a pot of boiling pasta to stop it boiling over.
- Peel ginger with the edge of a spoon. Less waste than a knife.
- Cook once, eat twice: make double and freeze half in single portions.
