The 24-hour rule for spending

For anything that isn't a need and costs more than you'd spend without thinking, wait 24 hours before buying it.

Put it in your basket, close the tab, and come back tomorrow. Half the time you won't care anymore. The other half, you'll buy it knowing you really wanted it.

Variations people use:

  • One week for anything over a set amount.
  • Write the item on a list. At the end of the month, buy only what's still on it.
  • Ask "how many hours of work is this?" instead of looking at the price.

Bonus: unsubscribe from shop newsletters. The best way to resist a sale is to never hear about it.
